Seeking, searching, blinded by the ego's thirsting for achievement, caught up in the seeming discoveries of uncharted terrain — this was the road i walked for years, certain that truth was somewhere ahead of me, always one more turn away.
The Vision
i close my eyes and see it — not some distant country, not a reward waiting at the end of a road, but this room, this morning, exactly as it is.
~
this is the first time i have seen it. not new information, not new geography — only, finally, new eyes. i think of the old line about the real voyage of discovery costing us nothing in landscape and everything in seeing. i had traveled far enough into my own ambition to understand it exactly backward.
~
the light comes through the window at the same angle it always comes through. i have walked past it ten thousand mornings without seeing it as anything but backdrop. now i see it as the whole address.
steam rises from a cup i am not in a hurry to finish. my hands, older than i remember agreeing to, rest on the table without asking anything of the hour ahead of them.
~
the fool in the old card still walks toward the cliff, still trusts the road with his eyes turned skyward. but in this vision he stops. not because he has arrived — there was never anywhere to arrive — but because he finally looks down and sees the ground was carrying him the entire time.
~
this is not ecstasy. i want to be honest about that. it is not a door swinging open onto some other world. it is the door i am already standing in, noticed for the first time as a door.
~
i have wept like Sophia wept — for something i thought i'd lost, reaching toward a horizon that kept receding. no one told me the spark fell with me. no one had to. i only had to stop reaching and look down.
~
so the vision, if it can be called that, is only this: the same room. the same hands. the same light at the same familiar angle. nothing rearranged, nothing added — only finally, finally seen.
