The Fool
"The future enters into us, in order to transform itself in us, long before it happens."
— Rilke, The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge
i have been the fool waiting for the calendar to turn. i believed tomorrow would arrive as rescue — a ledger finally balanced, a fracture finally mended — and that time itself, simply by passing, would do the work i was avoiding.
~
but fulfillment was never an arrival at some distant horizon. it was an excavation of what was already here.
the grain of wood under my hand. a difficult truth spoken in a quiet room. the weight of a single breath. these were not sketches for a life still to come. they were the life itself, and i kept walking past them toward a future that owed me nothing.
~
a sober heart does not project its longing onto tomorrow. it does not send its fears and its unfinished business ahead of itself, asking the future to carry what belongs to today.
when i stopped waiting, the urgency turned inward. the shadow i wanted to avoid and the hope i wanted to attain both dissolved into the same place — the exacting, unglamorous demand of the hour i was already standing in.
