The Afternoon of My Life

i built a container for most of my life. work, striving, the accumulating record of what i had done and could point to. that was the first half's task, though i did not call it that at the time. i called it simply living, or trying to.

somewhere past sixty, (seventy) the reaching stopped answering back. i would set a new goal and feel the old thrill fail to arrive. the container was full. what remained was not another achievement — it was the older, slower question of what to do with what was already inside it.

~

jung called it the afternoon of life, and warned that a person who carries the psychology of the morning into it pays for it with damage to the soul. i believe him. i have felt that damage — the hollow feeling of chasing a summit i had already reached, of asking the past to justify itself instead of receiving it.

individuation, he said, is the task now. not more acquiring. becoming what was already there, underneath the doing.

~

erikson gave it a starker frame: ego integrity against despair. i did not choose that vocabulary but i recognize the choice. to look back at the whole mosaic — the years i am proud of and the ones i am not, the amends made and the ones still owed — and call it coherent. not clean. coherent.

despair is the alternative: to look at the same mosaic and see only what should have been different, and to keep straining toward some future correction that never quite arrives, because i have not yet accepted what already happened.

~

alchemy has a word i trust more than psychology's. solve et coagula(1). the first half is solve — dissolving into experience, taking things apart, expanding outward. the second half is coagula — the slow crystallizing of what all that dissolving actually meant. the achievements do not vanish. they harden into something usable. a lead already partly turned.

~

i do not think this is passivity. the inventory is not passive. sitting with a whole life and calling it mine — failures included, not excluded — is harder work than the reaching ever was. but it is the right work now. the scoreboard was never going to say enough. only the harvest will.

(1) In Gnosticism, Solve et Coagula is the process of freeing the divine spark from the material prison to achieve spiritual rebirth.
