What the Dream Broke Open
i woke inside a pit i thought i had already left. the dream didn't invent anything. it returned me — to a version of myself i lived inside for years, back when any challenge felt like a threat and any threat meant i had to fight my way out with words built to wound.
i want to describe it honestly. when i felt cornered i didn't feel angry first. i felt afraid. and fear, in me, didn't look like fear. it looked like attack. i would shut the door on my own heart and reach for whatever would hurt fastest. some part of me — small, terrified, sure it was about to be destroyed — wanted it to land. i wasn't defending myself. i was trying to make someone else feel what i couldn't hold.
that's the marriage the dream took me back to. that's the man i was inside it.

what the dream left me with this morning wasn't just memory. it was doom. shame. the old conviction that becoming myself is a task built for someone more capable than i am — that i have been circling the same incapacity so long i will die still circling it.
i know this feeling. i have written about it before, without naming it directly — a darkness in the heart of light, not dramatic, just an absence of felt belonging, the sense of doing the next right thing without any assurance it was landing anywhere. this is that same country. the dream just gave it a face and a year and a room i used to stand in.

but shame is not information. it only tells me i am bad. what the dream actually handed me is different — shadow material, the logismoi surfacing on their own schedule, not mine. and shadow doesn't want to be punished. it wants to be looked at.
so i looked. and what i saw wasn't a monster. it was a man so afraid of being unloved that he tried to unlove first — faster, louder — so no one else could get there before him.

rilke says sadness is the moment something unknown enters us, and the old self grows quiet and numb around it because the future is arriving, unannounced, wearing an unfamiliar face. hesse says the bird has to break the egg to be born. i have quoted both of these to myself before. this morning they cost more, because the thing breaking wasn't an idea. it was a memory of who i let myself become when i was afraid.
i can't go back and unmake those years. i can only hand them over — the same third step i have written about elsewhere, not as concept but as the only exit i've ever actually found. not fixing. surrendering. this is prima materia — base, ugly, worthless-looking — and it is exactly the material the work starts from. not despite the shame, but right through it.

i don't know yet what coagulates from this. i only know the dissolving is real, and the nigredo has to have its way before anything new can take root. i am not required to solve it by noon.
i am only required to stay in this room — instead of leaving the way i used to leave, attacking my way out the door to balance a ledger that was never mine to keep.
